The Song

A song can most definitely be a tonic for the soul. It is at times of fatigue (both physical as well as existential) that a song can bring much needed solace or an energizing mood boost.

Tonner Doll Company's complex Déjà Vu line (circa 2013) presented a singer by the name of Judy Watson (one of several reincarnations of the same soul) to evoke the fashion essence of the 1950s. It seems difficult to read the name Judy being associated with music and not think of the exemplary Judy Garland. Though the doll's look is not an homage to the quintessential soul denuder, Dolldom seized the opportunity to pay tribute.

In this Dolldom exclusive, Judy Watson sings her heart out just like her namesake did, always aiming to express the purest emotions that the human heart can feel in fashions created by another force of nature - LizRetros- whose vision of beauty and glamour is ever so divinely original. Bogue's Vogues, the undeniable icon of fashion doll design also joins in the fun, as well as groundbreaking Byanca of Houston. A Gerry Broerman take on a Théâtre de la Mode classic also makes an encore appearance.

Judy sings "For Me and My Guy" in a LizRetros flocked bloom dress.

"Building the Yellow Brick Road" was one of Judy Watson's biggest hits. So is this beaded LizRetros wonder.

In a Gerry Broerman interpretation of a Théâtre de la Mode design by Maggy Rouff, Judy debuted "Il'l Go on Singing".

Bogue's Vogues regaled Judy with one of its iconic designs for her show at The Palladium where she moved the audience to tears with her emotional rendition of "Being Myself".

At the same show in San Francisco, Judy wore this LizRetros fab suit to sing "Meet Me by the Rainbow"

Byanca of Houston's sensational and figure-defining fashion has been worn by many famous personalities such as Madra Lord, but it was Judy who, while singing "The Ferry Song", turned it into a sensation.

LizRetros' take on the Barbie doll's "Mood for Music" gave Judy's "Bring on the Rain; I'll Always Shine" the very best accompaniment.

During one of her London shows at The Talk of the Town, Judy wore LizRetros' iconic Lurex dress and revealed not only her left leg but also her heart singing "The Soul Next Door".

Judy closed one of her performances at Carnegie Hall in LizRetros' leopard gown and brought the house down with "The Man I Sent Away". Necklace by Exsyntrik on Etsy.

The Look of Goro

Goro Tachibana (second from left), younger brother to Wataru, is one of those almost mythical dolls of which dreams are made. As part of first generation Licca-chan's storyline, Goro expresses boys' sartorial styles at the very end of the 1960s, and as such, is a proud exponent of Mod style. Goro's fashions, created by Takara, invariably feature short pants, sometimes with a tie, sometimes with suspenders, sometimes with a jumper, sometimes with overalls, but always, always -  shorts, for Goro was after all, a kid, and long pants seemed to have been the purview of older boys like Wataru.

For this end-of-July-2023 feature, Dolldom celebrates the joys of being Goro Tachibana with an exploration of his style as only LeRetroz can do it. From space exploration to hanging out with Gumby and Pokey, LeRetroz's creations delight with their pop-culture references and tongue-in-cheek humor.

LeRetroz's fashions Goro his first pair of long pants in emerald green velvet to go with a colorful turtleneck. Yeah, Baby!

L'artist! Goro paints Licca-chan's portrait in a classic look pairing black slacks, a horizontally striped red and white turtleneck, and the necessary wool felt beret. Will Licca be as delighted as we are when she sees Goro's version of her? Licca's dress also by LeRetroz.

Double the fun! The Tachibana twins hang out with inseparable friends Gumby and Pokey in colorful shorts (yes, cool for summer!) with suspenders and short sleeved knit tops.

Space: The Next Frontier!
Goro plays that he is not lost in space in LeRetroz's imaginative space suit featuring 3-D printed helmet, glasses, and laser flashlight. But who are the inhabitants of this planet? Vintage Funny Fringes, of course.

Best Beyond Meat Burger? Check out Big Goro's! LeRetroz's pays tribute to this icon of the fast food world with a fabulous interpretation of the red-checkered overalls and logo t-shirt!

Dolldom thanks LeRetroz for their generosity of spirit and never-ending dedication to the creation of what does not exist in the doll world. If it were not for LeRetroz, Dolldom would not have as much fun!

A Day of B&G and Licca-chan!

Licca-chan has a day of B&G fun with her pal LizRetros! Inspired by the look of Licca-chan's 1967 looks, the fabulous Beauty and Glamour maven created seven original dress designs for the Japanese superstar, who is, nonetheless, hard-to-dress due to the relative scarcity of made-to-fit fashions for the first Licca sculpt. The lucky models, all reprints (aka reproductions), convey a kicky and glamorous vibe. Leave it to LizRetros to create beauty for all dolls! Thank you!

G!

Back in the 1970s, any designer worth their salt had a signature logo, a ubiquitous trademark that firmly established the fashion brand as a household word. Such a tradition remains present these days in fashion lines such a Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci, whose initials have become graphically iconic and almost universally identifiable.

Virtual Doll Convention's Grace is on trend with her latest outfit-of-the-month, created by Ruby Red Galleria. An essential piece for fall and winter, the "Iconic G" knit dress gives a playful nod to the 1970s and to fashion brands that transcend fads. The deep lavender woven leather bag, also by Ruby Red Galleria, adds a fantastic touch of color to the powerful black and white combo. And of course, Grace wears another staple for fall and winter: tall boots in supple black faux leather by Facets by Marcia. Grace is ready for cool weather days.

For this Dolldom exclusive, Grace invited her friend Rayne to hang out with her and they had a grand time. Rayne's leopard tube dress by LizRetros finds the perfect pair of short boots, also in faux leopard,  another hot item in Grace's Boutique

It's time for cozy and fabulous.

The Shobijin

Please, play video and allow Mothra's song to accompany you as you read.

Embedded in the minds of so many who, as children, enjoyed the mysterious world of the Yoko Tanaka film, The Shobijin and Mothra's song become an invitation for playxploration at Dolldom with the company of Licca-chan and her friend Izumi-chan and, of course, the magic of LizRetros.

LizRetros, priestess of Beauty * Glamour, summons the spirit of The Luminous Fairies with a magnificently unique and über-detailed giftset of fashions and figures made to fit the first generation Licca-chan body dimensions. LizRetros' selection of daffodil-yellow vintage satin with flocked flower print for the mini-dress is enhanced by the addition of a vintage lace overskirt. The design, original, captures the essence of both The Shobijin as well as Licca-chan's late-1960's fashion look.

But what would The Shobijin be without crowns? 3-D printed diadems, painted matte gold, are LizRetros' inspired answer.

But hold on! There's more!

How are the two friends to play The Shobijin without their monstrous film peers?

Well, LizRetros solves that issue with a set of 3-D printed and hand-painted miniatures that will bring hours of fun to Licca-chan and Izumi-chan's Infant Island rêverie.
