Which Way to the Beach?

Looking at the calendar with blurry vision, Myles Magpie clears his eyes to realize that it’s his day off! No wedding cakes or dresses today! Not missing a beat, Myles slings on his bikini briefs as if he has thrown a ball in the air and caught it. The sun is out and it becomes quickly very obvious to Myles that he hasn't tanned in quite some time. Walking through the parking lot a man catches Myles’s attention. Rubbernecking so hard, Myles trips over a grate in the concrete and falls. “That was a pretty graceful fall!” - a kind voice from behind him says with a bit of a chuckle. His name is Malekai and he reaches  out his hand to help Myles up. “Looks like you will survive!" - he adds with a smile. Myles stands up and embarrassingly brushes off the dust and with a mischievous smile says: “Which way to the beach?”

Disco at the Pity Party

The title of this entry may sound complicated, but it's not! It's all about new fab doll intros!

Joey Versaw introduces a new character from The Daffodolly's Band and her name is Disco!

"Debut Disco"

Disco is the fun loving drummer of “The Daffodolly’s “ and Meadow's best friend from childhood. She comes in a color saturated bell sleeve stage dress, “Mua!” necklace, and a truly fab wig with hand painted headband to match her dress.

Debut Disco is a limited edition of 20.

It’s Meadow's Birthday but Irma (Meadow's frenemy) has intentionally delayed bandmate Kirby and Meadow is beside herself. Real friend Disco turns up to try to cheer the forlorn birthday girl. Meadow comes with party dress, black "Taylor" wig, and birthday invitations.

Ceci n'est pas (seulement) une poupée

We at Dolldom are of the opinion that there is nothing but pleasure in being surrounded by dolls. And while many enjoy living, cooking, shaving, dressing up and sleeping in the company of their dolls, others prefer to devote a separate space that functions as a realm of dolly delight.

But when codes are challenged and, as a result, broken, our consciousness evolves and appreciation for expression via the doll form augments. For it is not everyday that the dollector can combine doll and décor in a harmoniously seamless manner.

Hvala Dolls' Mi is such a code breaker. Although very much a doll, Mi is designed to express a message of universal appeal: humanity (as young as it is) is being studied by an older (more experienced) form of intelligence. Mi is an intergalactic traveler who with every OOAK iteration brings an invitation to ponder such an illuminating and humbling idea.

In this Dolldom entry, two Mi dolls hang out among a collection of vases. Two are Puerto Rican ceramic vessels designed to evoke the Cemí of Taíno people in the Caribbean. The third is a Jonathan Adler minimalist creature. As if trying to be incognito, the Mi and the vases function as observers that we, in turn, observe, perhaps completing a circle. But is it truly complete when, in the background, we discover eyes watching us watching Mi?

Peel Me a Grape

Joey Versaw's fantastic Mary Magpie is ready for spring. The ever-creative Mr. Versaw has created a new version of ultra limited edition dolls for 2017, one of which is "Up in Smoke" Mary Magpie.

Meant to evoke the style of vintage boudoir dolls from the 1920-30s, Mary exudes the attitude of a seasoned diva in her sparkly strapless jumpsuit and platinum tresses.

Mary Magpie, the world's first-ever 3-D printed fashion doll, continues to redefine what a fashion doll can do.

3-D Wigstock

Joey Versaw's Mary Magpie, the very first 3-D printed fashion doll, invited Dolldom to her wig shop. Mary is known for always being perfectly groomed and for being the only fashion model in the world whose hair stays in place during photo sessions. For her wigs, like her, are 3-D printed too and hand painted by Mr. Versaw to complement the specific make-up palette of his dolls.

Dolldom was in awe of the displays. Marta Wigstand models a Waves wig in sunny blonde.

A Magpie wigstand wears a classic Bob in black.

This Bettie wig in Mr. Versaw's signature yellow blonde tempted Mary so much that she decided to model it.

Mary is a blonde!

The Bettie wig in a deep red wine shade is the definition of seductive.

Mary modeled the style in a deep dark chocolate...

and then in a milk chocolate shade.

But then there was blue! Indigo blue!

And Mary modeled it too.

As we exited we noticed yet another wonderful style beckoning us to return to Mary Magpie's wig shop very soon.

Bodacious Babette

It all started a few years back: Bulgarian artist Brani Mladenov and American doll maker Joey Versaw came up with an idea for a new doll character with a full-figured body and a treasure trove of attitude. Both were inspired by the aesthetic of antique French and German bisque dolls yet wanted her to have a modern touch and, above all, a realistic full-figured ball-jointed body.

As ideas congealed, a hardworking gal emerged. The yet-to-be-named lady would be a nurse by daytime and a burlesque star at night - a fact that would allow her to lead a life of purpose and then indulge in over-the-top glamour. And shortly thereafter, Mr. Versaw and Mr. Mladenov came up with her name: Babette. An homage to a character in Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, a 1977 American live action and animated musical fantasy film directed by Richard Williams, Babette is a French doll known for being stubborn, gorgeous, strong, and somewhat bratty.

Once the name and the character of this new lady were set, Mr. Versaw worked on her sculpt while Mr. Mladenov conceived the visual brand. For her first appearance in 2016, the artists wanted to imbue her with the essence of 1930s, mirroring the strength and glamour of the famous ladies of The Silver Screen such as Mae West and Katherine Hepburn, women who broke societal mores, captivated their audiences and paved the road for women's rights. Babette is meant to honor this legacy.

Babette, like her predecessor Mary Magpie, is made of laser-sintered nylon plastic. Her wigs are molded (as well as digitally-printed too) to ensure that she will never have a stray hair strand. Each doll is hand painted and then hand assembled by Mr. Versaw.

3D in 3D

So what happens when the first digitally-printed fashion doll, Mary Magpie, goes 3D herself? The boundless creativity of creator Joey Versaw brings us this kicky version of his unique Miss Magpie.

Styled with three different sculpted 3D printed wigs, Mary references one of cinema's milestones - the invention of three-dimensional stereoscopic film and channels the vibe of late 80s fashion style.

Articulated and strung, 3D Mary poses beautifully and is ready to take you into the third dimension!
